Mixing & Mastering FAQ

WHAT INFORMATION DO YOU NEED FROM ME WHEN I CONTACT YOU?

Sending the following will really help me to understand your project and provide you with a price:

  • Rough mixes of your tracks
  • Commercial reference tracks (songs that have elements that you like and want in yours)
  • How many songs need mixing
  • The number of individual tracks that make up each song
  • Your project schedule and mix delivery deadline

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST FOR YOU TO MIX/MASTER MY RECORD?

Although i have aproximate prices displayed on this site, the actual quote may vary depending on many factors. To give an accurate quote i will need the following infomation:

  • Rough mixes of your tracks
  • How many songs need mixing
  • Song lengths
  • The number of individual tracks that make up each song
  • Your project schedule and mix delivery deadline

WHAT'S THE PROCESS?

  1. Get in touch with as much info as possible and let me hear your songs. You’ll get a ballpark price estimate or a firm quote depending on how ready your production is for mixing. Ask as many questions and make sure things are right for you.
  2. When you’re ready to go ahead, I’ll invoice you for 50% of the agreed project total.
  3. You then deliver the music to me as specified in my Mix Prep Guide.
  4. I’ll review and approve the files and once I’ve received payment I’ll begin mixing.
  5. You’ll receive an invite to a Dropbox Folder and a mix of your first song will be there in high quality mp3 format to listen to and download.
  6. After receiving your feedback I will either revise the mix until it’s signed off or I will continue with the other songs. Repeat this process for the other songs until the whole project is signed off.
  7. I’ll invoice you for the remaining 50% payment.
  8. Once I’ve received payment I will send all your required files (mixes, instrumentals, sync mixes, live mixes, stems) as high resolution WAVs for mastering.

HOW MANY MIX REVISIONS AM I ALLOWED?

I will always push for the best result possible, I typically aim for 2 revisions, but will go further if needed. What I do require when it comes to mix revisions is clear communication and that each revision is improving the mix. Reverting to earlier mixes or ‘trying stuff out’ without good reason isn’t great – let’s not do that!

WHAT DO I GET AT THE END?

You will receive your mixes as 24bit WAV files at your project sample rate. If required, you can also have instrumentals, radio edits and customised sync mixes and live mixes. For an extra charge you can also receive bounced mix stems to be used for remixing, live performance usage or just for your own records.

WHEN AND HOW DO I PAY?

For projects under £100, payment to be paid upfront once the fee is agreed and you a ready to go ahead with mixing

For projects over £100, once a fee is agreed and you’re ready to go ahead with mixing, I’ll invoice you for 50% of the agreed project total. Once all the mixes are signed off, I’ll invoice you for the remaining 50% payment.

DO YOU OFFER A MONEY BACK GUARANTEE?

I offer a money back guarantee for first-time customers on my mixing services, which I’m happy to say in over 10 years has never been used. I make sure you have approved the first song of any mix project before going ahead with the rest of the project. If approval of the first song cannot be met, the 50% upfront fee will be refunded to you in full. But once you’ve approved the first song, the money back guarantee expires.

HOW LONG WILL THE JOB TAKE?

This really depends on my current schedule, availability and the size or complexity of your project. When you get in touch let me know what your requirements are for the delivery of the final mixes.

HOW DO I CALCULATE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF TRACKS IN MY SESSION?

The following counts as one track

  • A stereo track
  • A multi-miked source eg {Kick D12 & Kick 47} or {Gtr1 57, Gtr 1 R121 & Gtr1 DI DI and Mic of an instrument
  • Dry and Wet versions
  • Split mono files eg [Little Phatty.L.wav and Little Phatty.R.wav} count as one track but please send interleaved stereo wherever possible
The following count as multiple tracks
  • Multiple samples with the same rhythm eg Kick Sample 1 and Kick Sample 2
  • Double/multi tracked instruments and voices
  • Different sounds along the same track (they should be on separate tracks)

HOW SHOULD I EXPORT MY TRACKS? SHOULD THEY BE DRY (no effects) OR WET (with effects)?

See my Mix Prep Guide

HOW SHOULD I NAME MY TRACKS?

See my Mix Prep Guide

HOW DO I SEND YOU MY TRACKS?

See my Mix Prep Guide

DO YOU USE COMMERCIAL REFERENCE TRACKS FOR MIXING?

Yes I use them all the time. I find it an extremely helpful way to communicate how you want the overall mix or certain aspects of the mix to sound. We’re not looking to rip anyone off – it’s primarily a communication aid between you and me at the early stages of the project.

WHAT GENRES DO YOU MIX?

Have a listen to my mix work. I think it crosses many genres. Whilst theoretically I’m happy to mix any genre, no one is a specialist in every genre out there and I’ll be open with you if I don’t think I’m the best fit for your music and hopefully I will be able to recommend a trusted colleague.

DO YOU OFFER ADDITIONAL PRODUCTION?

I also offer any array of different services, from recording, audio editing, re-amping etc
I am also well connected to other work collegues who specialise in audio production across many genres.
If this is something you might need, please get in touch

DO YOU TUNE VOCALS AND CORRECT OUT OF TIME PLAYING?

Yes this is something i do very often, pitch correction and quantising can vastly improve the quality and feel of a song
Please bear in mind that it if this is required, it may increase costs.

DO YOU ALLOW ATTENDED MIXING SESSIONS?

Although i prefer to mix mostly on my own, you are more than welcome to attend the mix session.

** Current measures for Covid-19 - No attended mix sessions at the moment**

MY SONG HAS OVER 100 INDIVIDUAL TRACKS. CAN YOU MIX WITH THIS MANY TRACKS?

If needs be, but I would prefer to work with the least amount of tracks it takes for me to have the optimum control to get the best mix possible. This is song dependent so it often requires a conversation in order to gauge it right. Often it means bouncing down vocal stacks and multi-miked drum parts, grouping doubled backing vocals, double-tracked guitars, any instrument that has been stereo-miked. In short – speak to me if you’re in doubt
